Bupleurum Griffithii

Bupleurum 'Griffithii' Seeds (Hare's Ear)

If you find your home-grown bouquets look a bit "heavy" or cluttered, Bupleurum is the missing ingredient. It produces tall, wiry, branching stems topped with lime-green, spurge-like flowers that act as a natural scaffold, holding other blooms in place.

Often compared to Eucalyptus for its foliage or Euphorbia for its colour, this is the ultimate neutral filler. It adds "air" and movement to arrangements, and its acid-green tone makes hot oranges vibrate and cool blues look deeper. It is incredibly long-lasting in the vase (often outliving the main flowers) and dries beautifully for winter wreaths.

🌿 Understanding the Plant

Bupleurum is a Hardy Annual.

It is easy to grow but has a reputation for being tricky to germinate if you don't know its secret (see below!). 'Griffithii' is the specific variety bred for cut flowers, offering longer stems and more uniform growth than the wild type.

The "False Flower": The lime-green "petals" are actually bracts (modified leaves). Because they aren't delicate petals, they don't wilt in the rain or fade in the sun.

🌱 Growing Guide: How to Sow and Grow

Crucial Tip: Bupleurum seeds need darkness to germinate. If you leave them on the surface of the soil, they will refuse to grow.

Germination:
Sow directly outdoors in Autumn (Sept) or Spring (March-April). Cover the seeds completely with soil or vermiculite to exclude light. They prefer cool temperatures to germinate (13-15°C), so don't put them in a hot propagator. Germination takes 14-21 days.

Where to Sow:
It needs full sun and well-drained soil. It dislikes root disturbance, so direct sowing is often better than transplanting.

Care While Growing:
Support: Although the stems are wiry, the plants can get top-heavy when in full bloom. Planting them close together (20cm) allows them to support each other, or use some netting.
